If your shop is growing and more people need to access ESPRIT, you’ve probably heard about server licenses (also called network licenses). They’re a great option for sharing access across a team, but they come with a few things to consider before making the switch.

What’s a Server License?
A server license lets multiple users run ESPRIT from a central computer — the license server. It works like this:
- Each license allows one person at a time to use ESPRIT.
- Any computer connected to your network can access the license.
- You don’t need to install or activate ESPRIT separately on every machine.
If your team shares workstations or works in shifts, this setup gives you more flexibility and better control.
Why Shops Choose Server Licensing
- Easy sharing – Any user on the network can open ESPRIT (one at a time per seat).
- Scalable – Add more seats as your team grows.
- Cost-effective – No need for individual licenses on every computer.
- One machine license – You don’t need to license every PC running ESPRIT.
Is a Server License Right for You?
Ask yourself these quick questions:
- Do you have a static IP and stable network?
A static IP gives your server a fixed location so other machines can find it. Most home and small business internet plans use dynamic IPs, which can change and break the connection. - Do you have a dedicated server, or will it run on a user’s PC?
A dedicated machine is more stable and reliable long-term. - How many people need ESPRIT at the same time?
You’ll need one license per concurrent user. - Is someone available to manage the license server?
Someone with admin rights is needed to make changes or run updates.
Are any users working remotely?
A VPN can be set up by your IT team, or you can purchase a license borrowing feature to check out a license and use ESPRIT offline.
When a Server License Really Makes Sense
Here are a few scenarios where a server license setup is a no-brainer:
- Your shop runs multiple shifts
Share licenses across day/night crews without buying extra. - You use more than one workstation for CAD/CAM
No need to shuffle USB keys or reconfigure licenses when switching machines.

Desktop vs Laptop: Choose the Right Hardware
While laptops are great for mobility, desktop workstations are better for running ESPRIT, especially with complex toolpaths or 3D CAD. They’re faster, more stable, and often better equipped for heavy processing.
If possible, we recommend using desktops for ESPRIT programming to avoid performance bottlenecks.
What You’ll Need (Minimum Server Setup)

A Few Final Tips
- License Borrowing: Great for travel or offline use, but licenses won’t be available to others while borrowed.
- Cloud/Virtual Servers: ESPRIT can run on virtual servers. Just make sure to request a machine-bound license (virtual dongle) to avoid USB key issues.
Firewall Port: ESPRIT uses TCP Port 13579 — your IT team should make sure it’s open.
